Boil a ham bone with and left over ham gravy and ham and 1-2 cans of low sodium chicken broth.

Boil until meat falls off the bone, about 1 hour.

Add 3 potatoes, cut into bite size chunks

1 medium onion chopped

1 large jar of great northern beans (these will not be found with canned beans, they are in a glass jar, usually found by saurekraut in the grocery store)

1 tbsp of pepper

Simmer all ingrediants until potatoes are soft.

Serve with bread and butter.

Tastes way better the second day when the potatoes have absorbed all the flavor.

Do not add salt to the pot as ham tends to be very salty, that is why the low sodium chicken broth.
i didnt know what you meant by classic but i got this one:

INGREDIENTS:

1 pound dry navy beans, soaked overnight

4 quarts water

1 pound leftover ham bone with meat attached

1 onion, finely diced

2 carrots, sliced

2 stalks celery, diced

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon paprika

DIRECTIONS:

In a large stock pot, add water, ham bone and pre-soaked beans. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until beans are close to soft.

Remove bone and cut off remaining meat. Remove 1/3 of beans and mash with potato masher or food processor.

Return ham and beans back to stock pot and add onion, carrots, celery, garlic powder, pepper and paprika. If you are using dripping from a previously cooked ham add those now. Simmer until vegetables are tender and serve.

if you want simpilier just im and ask
besides the ham and beans, toss in a chopped onion, and serve with horseradish, yumm
how basic and classic, basically just get some ham and some beans, i perfer great north add some salt and pepper cook beans and ham in crock pot or cook beans then add ham. it you like good soup however, brown the ham, add garlic and onions, add some sausage or kilbalsa and or some chicken, use good seasoning i like to mix it up depending on if you like spicey or not, brown all the meat add to crock pot and heat, dont overcook the beans or they will turn to mush, garnish with fresh onions, and maybe a little cilantro and serve with cornbread, good luck!
