Why do some recipes for honey glazed ham(gammon) say to boil it first while others just say to roast it ?

I am confused by so many conflicting recipes on the web - also how far in advance can I cook it if I want to have it cold on Boxing Day?Why do some recipes for honey glazed ham(gammon) say to boil it first while others just say to roast it ?
The recipes that say boil it will be older recipes, ham used to contain much more salt than it does now so it was boiled before roasting to remove some of the salt. Modern curing methods don't use as much salt so boiling is no longer necessary, although some people still do it.Why do some recipes for honey glazed ham(gammon) say to boil it first while others just say to roast it ?
you can boil or roast it, and several days before christmas and keep in fridge, its a personal preference as to whether to boil or roast it.
The best way I've found is to boil it until cooked, then glaze and bake it.

You can make it about 2 or 3 days in advance and by Boxing day it will have well chilled.
I roast it in foil..to prevent drying out but it will be juicy.

two days in advance but leave it in foil.
boiling can help tender the meat and lose some of the salt content, roasting can make the meat dry

Hope this helps. :)
